One of the biggest questions my couples ask when they’re wedding planning is how to choose the best engagement session location.
Here are some really simple tips to come up with ideas for your engagement photos.
Get Creative
Think about the most interesting place you want to visit or see. Want to fly to the red rock of Sedona or hike through Starved Rock? Let’s do it! Maybe you’d love to be photographed next to an airplane or at your favorite vineyard. Brainstorm all the most amazing places you’d love to be photographed. It can near or far. I love traveling to old and new places.
Get Sentimental
Another way to choose a great engagement session location is to choose a spot that has sentimental value. Maybe you want to be photographed where your fiancé proposed or where you had your first date. All of these can be amazing ideas. Picking a place that holds meaning for both of you is always a great choice.
Get Interested
Think about what you like to do together. Do you have any hobbies or activities that are really important to you? If you’re a couple who loves to be in nature maybe you want to head out to an Arboretum or a Nature Conservatory. These can be beautiful spaces to photograph you and your love. Using these ideas can really help you come up with something unique to you as a couple.

Other Things to Consider
Once you have ideas for where you want to go for your engagement session there are a couple of things for you to consider to make your final decisions.
Wardrobe
One factor that might help you decide where you want to be photographed is to think about what you want to wear. You want to make sure you feel comfortable in what you’re wearing in the spot you choose.
Timing
Another factor to consider is the time of day. I always try to maximize the best light for engagement sessions, which is why I shoot just two hours before sunset or at sunrise can be some of the most beautiful times of day. You just need to consider the surroundings you have.
If you’re in the heart of downtown you might have a little less light available to you quicker. If you’re in the open you’ll want to make sure there’s plenty of locations to take advantage of the light that’s flattering!
