When you start to learn photography for your business it can get super overwhelming trying to figure out what you actually need.  So I compiled a quick list of the best photo equipment for creative business owners and bloggers.

This one’s a quick read.  If you’ve been following along with this series you know my other posts have been packed with beginner DSLR info!  

DSLR

The first thing you need is a camera.  I know you know this but it really it is clutch!  Get a DSLR.

I’m not going to get into the debate between Nikon and Canon.  If I’m being really honest I chose Canon not because it’s a million times better than Nikon, but because my first digital camera was a Canon point and shoot.

Since I shoot Canon I share from that perspective.  I think the Canon TI series s a great intro level but the Nikon equivalent will work just as well!  My first DSLR was the Canon 60D.

The Best Starter Lens

Once you have an awesome camera the next best thing to have is a great lens.  I shoot mostly with prime lenses.  Prime lenses are great and tend to take a little bit sharper photos and make help me create great dreamy backgrounds when shooting with lower apertures. I also just love the look they give.

The Canon 50mm 1.4 is an excellent place to start.  It’s a manageable price, and takes awesome photos.  I still shoot with my 50mm 1.4.  The images I get are exactly the look and feel I want.

If you’re looking for an even more cost effective lens I have heard the Canon 50mm 1.8 is also awesome.  I haven’t ever shot with it, but I know anyone who has always says it’s amazing for the price point.

Tripod

A great tripod can do so much to help you out!  There are two great reasons to use your tripod:  really slow shutter speeds, and weird camera angles.  

You can keep your shutter speed really low when shooting on a tripod which can be helpful depending on the situation.  The tripod will help keep your camera stable when using really slow shutter speeds.  

It’s also great for staying steady when at an odd angle.  When you’re trying to shoot from certain angles it can be difficult to stay steady.  This is exactly when I just pop my camera on a tripod!

Remote

Remotes are pretty awesome for several reasons.  They help when you have a camera set-up on a tripod.  You can easily trigger the camera to take a photo with remote.

 You can also use a remote to help you take photos when you’re in the shot for something like a self portrait.  Finally, having a remote allows your hands to be free to style a flat lay photo then use the remote to trigger the shutter.

Foam Boards

Foam boards make excellent backgrounds and are great when you need to create your own flat lay photos.

These are awesome because you can paint them, add contact paper, or use them as is.   If You do not have picture perfect areas in your house you can totally create your own using foam boards.  

All of these make great starter gear for your non-profesh photo kit ;)
